In January I worked out with the Iona Heritage Centre that basking sharks were a possible design for them.
The first shark I made was useless as a spatula because the mouth was at the business end, but then, months later, after glancing at a bit of wood lying around with a large hole in the right place, I worked out that they still looked like sharks with the mouth at the side.
On the day we had sent the order off to Iona, I was sitting scroll-sawing and shouted out 'BASTING SHARK!', so we had to send new labels to them. Cooking puns are ideal.
Joe later refined the design by perfecting the tail-fin and adding extra fins.
No two spatulas will ever be exactly the same. We don't use templates. Each piece of wood is different, and the shape, curve and grain make up the character of each spatula. Cut, sanded, finished and oiled by hand, each one is unique, and the photographs should be treated as a fair guide only. This one is in Ash
